Prevalence of and risk factors for fungal vaginitis caused by non-albicans species

Article Abstract:

Other species of Candida besides albicans may be an increasingly common source of fungal vaginitis. Vaginitis is vaginal inflammation. Researchers analyzed cultures of 1,263 patients with symptomatic yeast vaginitis obtained from 1988 to 1995. The rate of non-albicans fungal vaginitis rose 70% over the eight study years. HIV-positive patients and those with chronic fungal vaginitis were more likely to be infected with non-albicans vaginitis. Doctors should be trained to recognize non-albicans fungal vaginitis, and should not treat them with azole derivatives.

Effect of antibiotic use on the prevalence of symptomatic vulvovaginal candidiasis

Article Abstract:

Antibiotic use may predispose women to vulvovaginal candidiasis. This is an infection of the vulva and vagina caused by the fungus Candida. Researchers compared antibiotic use in 684 women with vulvovaginal candidiasis and 901 women without the infection. Nineteen percent of the women with Candida infection had used antibiotics in the previous month, compared to 12% of the other women. Women who used antibiotics for the longest time were more likely to have Candida infection than women who used them for a short time.

The effect of vaginal candidiasis on the shedding of human immunodeficiency virus in cervicovaginal secretions

Article Abstract:

The influence of symptomatic vulvovaginal candidiasis on the shedding of HIV-1 in cervicovaginal secretions of HIV-1-infected women is examined. Vulvovaginal candidiasis is found to be associated with an increased number of copies of cell-associated and cell-free HIV-1 RNA in cervicovaginal secretions in HIV-infected women.
