Preventing School Violence: No Easy Answers

Article Abstract:

Psychiatrists and other mental health professionals discussed ways of preventing violent behavior in young people at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in June, 1998. Unfortunately, although much is know about effective interventions, implementing them takes money, a network of support services, and adults committed to voluntary service in their communities. In a national survey of nearly 22,000 students in public and private schools in the 1995-96 school year, nearly 13% said they knew another student who brought a gun to school.
