Primary and Secondary Syphilis- United States, 1997

Article Abstract:

The number of syphilis cases in the US has dropped substantially since 1990, which marked the peak of an epidemic that began in 1986. As of 1997, the number of cases of syphilis had dropped 88% from 1990 levels. The rate has dropped in all regions of the country but the South continues to have the highest rates of syphilis. Non-Hispanic blacks are disproportionally affected. More than 80% of states have achieved the revised national health objective for 2000 (HP2000) of four or fewer cases per 100,000 population. However, 86% of all counties have not achieved this objective.

Primary and Secondary Syphilis--United States, 1998

Article Abstract:

The number of people with syphilis reached an all-time low in 1998. There were 6,993 cases of syphilis that year, 19% fewer than in 1997 and 86% fewer than in 1990. The incidence of syphilis peaked in 1990, with 50,578 cases reported that year. Despite this progress, rates of syphilis in the South still remain higher than the national average. Rates are also higher in men, blacks, women between 20 and 24 and men between 30 and 39.
