Probation year raises difficult questions

Article Abstract:

The introduction of probation year in order to ensure the competence of the newly qualified nurses has raised many questions. These changes are increasing pressures on students as well as staff alike and it has to be considered that whether preregistration year is capable of solving the problems faced by the newly qualified nurses, or whether it would merely add to them.

The reasons for which district nursing and health visiting are struggling to fill posts and attract new recruits are presented. The number of health visiting and district nursing vacancies that took more than three months to fill increased by 39 and 28 percent respectively between March 2003 and March 2004.
