Prophylactic mastectomy emerging as way to cut cancer risk

Article Abstract:

Prophylactic mastectomies are sometimes performed on women who have a high risk of contracting breast cancer or who suffer from fibrocystic disease, which makes self-examination difficult. Even for women at risk, this controversial practice requires a great deal of consideration. As more and more women fall ill with breast cancer, preventative mastectomies are drawing increased attention. The debate over silicone breast implants, which are typically used in breast reconstruction, also influences this difficult decision.

Cancer risk found higher for uranium plant neighbors

Article Abstract:

The Center for Disease Control announced a study confirmed that residents near the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center, a uranium processing plant in Ohio, are more likely to get lung cancer and other cancers. The increased risk comes from exposure to radioactive dust and gases from the plant, located 18 miles northwest of Cincinnati, Ohio. Most the exposure occurred in the 1950s and 1960s, but true cleanup was not begun until 1989.
