Protection of cynomolgus macaque against cervicovaginal transmission of SIVmac251 by the spermicide benzalkonium chloride

Article Abstract:

The spermicide benzalkonium chloride completely protected six macaque monkeys from infection by simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) when used in a vaginal suppository. Six monkeys who were not treated all developed SIV infection. This virus is related to HIV but infects monkeys.

Fluctuations in HIV-1 viral load are correlated to CD4+ T-lymphocyte count during the natural course of infection

Article Abstract:

Researchers reject the hypothesis that fluctuations in viral load in the early stages of HIV infection randomly occur around a set point or underlying growth trend. Instead, they found that the fluctuations were better explained by changes in CD4+ T-cell counts.

Inverse correlation of telomerase activity/proliferation of CD4+ T lymphocytes and disease progression in simian immunodeficiency virus-infected nonhuman primates

Article Abstract:

An increase in telomerase activity and CD4+ T cell proliferation is associated with a delay in HIV disease progression, whereas a decrease in both is associated with rapid disease progression. This was the conclusion of a study of SIV infection in primates.
