Psychiatry and primary care forge new bonds

Article Abstract:

Many mental disorders go unrecognized because about half of these patients are seen only by a primary care physician. To encourage more primary care physicians to investigate the mental aspects of somatic complaints, the American Psychiatric Association in 1995 released a version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders specifically for primary care physicians. At some hospitals, residents do a rotation in psychiatric and substance abuse clinics and psychiatry residents work in specialized clinics for diabetics and others with chronic diseases.
