Public, physicians voice positive views of profession

Article Abstract:

Patients and doctors are generally pleased with the medical profession, according to an annual survey commissioned by the American Medical Association. Ninety percent of patients included in the survey said they were somewhat or very satisfied with their last doctor's visit. About two-thirds of surveyed doctors said they would choose to enter medical school again based on their perceptions of current medical education. The survey also illuminated physicians' concerns regarding their autonomy in prescribing medicine and training of primary care physicians.

Diminishing doctor diversity?

Article Abstract:

Minority enrollment would have been severely affected in 1996 if affirmative action were not in effect, according to a study by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The study found that minority enrollment would have fallen from 1,890 students to 397 students without affirmative action. The association believes that ending affirmative action will mean some minorities will be underrepresented in medical colleges.
