Pill alert for a million women

Article Abstract:

New studies indicate that the combined contraceptive pill, which is taken by more than 1 million women in the UK, is twice as likely as other types of pill to cause deep vein blood clots. Doctors are now being advised that women who are overweight, have a history of thrombosis or have varicose veins should not take this type of pill. The government's Committee on Safety of Medicines has now issued a warning, but has also emphasised that women should seek advice before abandoning a course of the combined pill.

Software studies ice-going ship designs

Article Abstract:

UK's Southampton Institute is developing software that would analyze the designs of ships in terms of their ability to withstand certain conditions such as ice. Called the Polar Ship Concept Design, the software is in its initial phase of development and at its current state, it consists of eight interactive modules that have been derived from mathematical formulations. The impact of factors such as deadweight and endurance and other dynamic properties on ship design are evaluated by these modules.

Pumping iron

Article Abstract:

Iron is an essential mineral to good health. It carries oxygen through blood and muscle and is needed for proper immune function. Iron deficiency is characterized by fatigue, pale skin, weakness, and overall irritability. Eating iron-rich foods may not be enough to prevent iron deficiency because absorption may be inhibited by other factors. Vitamin C-rich foods and meat, poultry and fish aid in the absorption of iron found in plant foods. A high-iron peppered beef recipe is included.
