Recurrent spontaneous haemarthrosis of the knee associated with a synovial and juxta-articular haemangiohamartoma

Article Abstract:

Hemarthrosis is the leakage of blood into the cavity of a joint, and may result as a complication of hemophilia, or from blood vessel tumors or malformations. There are two forms of blood vessel tumors, true hemangioma, a benign tumor of dilated blood vessels; and hemangiohamartomas, abnormal growths of normal blood vessel tissue. Both types of blood vessel tumors may involve the synovium, the membrane lining the cavity of the joint, and cause spontaneous bleeding into the joint. A case is described of a 24-year-old man who suffered several attacks of hemarthroses of the knee. The patient had a history of varicose veins and hypertrophy (overgrowth) of the right lower leg since childhood. The patient underwent repeated arthroscopic examination (the inspection of the inside of the joint), as well as one arthrotomy (the cutting open of the joint). Angiography, X-ray of the blood vessels, revealed the presence of a hemangiohamartoma. The patient's bleeding tendency resolved after surgical removal of the abnormal blood vessel growth. The patient recovered without complications and was able to continue with his normal physical activities. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

In situ zymographic localisation of type II collagen degrading activity in osteoarthritic human articular cartilage

Article Abstract:

In osteoarthritis, chondrocytes can degrade type II collagen, although the degradation varies from one site to another and also in amountas the lesions in the cartilage progresses. Chondrocytes normally are involved in the production of mRNA for individual metalloproteinases (MMPs)
