Reducing blood cholesterol levels in children: what have we learned from the DISC study?

Article Abstract:

Dietary changes should be the first choice in treating children whose elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) puts them at risk for heart disease as adults. The Dietary Intervention Study in Children (DISC) shows that a low-fat diet can reduce LDL-C but in a limited manner, without causing physical development or psychological harm. Most studies of cholesterol focus on adults, not pubescent children. More research is needed to determine how diet and maturation affects lipids. Counseling and periodic measurement of blood levels is important. Caution should be used in labeling children as high risk. Guidelines established by the National Cholesterol Education Program propose that only children whose family shows a high incidence of heart disease should be tested.

Cognitive outcomes of preschool children with prenatal cocaine exposure

Article Abstract:

Prenatal cocaine exposure is associated with an increased risk for specific cognitive impairments and lower likelihood of IQ above the normative mean at four years. The findings underscore the beneficial effects of environmental intervention in the prevention of mental retardation for cocaine-exposed children.
