Reefer madness - the federal response to California's Medical-Marijuana law

Article Abstract:

Physicians should be able to recommend marijuana to patients with life-threatening diseases such as cancer and AIDS. When California voters passed the Medical Marijuana initiative in 1996, it provoked a fierce response from the federal government. The law allows physicians to recommend marijuana for compassionate use. The government believes there is no evidence that marijuana is beneficial and that its promotion would send the wrong message to young people. However, a survey found that 83% of marijuana smokers never progressed to other serious drugs such as cocaine. There is enough justification for rescheduling marijuana as a Schedule II drug.

Conjoined twins -- the limits of law at the limits of life

Article Abstract:

A UK appeals court may have erred when it ruled that two conjoined twins should be separated against the wishes of the parents. In this case, the healthier twin would only survive if the weaker twin died. The parents refused to make this choice, but both the trial and appellate courts ruled in the doctors' favor, and the twins were separated.
