Cervicography for triage of women with mildly abnormal cervical cytology results

Article Abstract:

Cervicography may be able to detect precancerous cervical disease in women with an abnormal Pap smear. This technique involves taking photographs of the cervix with a specialized 35-mm camera.

Colposcopy quality control by remote review of digitized colposcopic images

Article Abstract:

A study is undertaken to estimate the accuracy of colposcopy quality control review of subjects' digitized colposcopic images during the atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance/low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion triage study (ALTS). The results reveal that colposcopy quality control by review of digitized colposcopic images in clinical trials warrants further evaluation if the accuracy can be improved.

Reflex human papillomavirus deoxyribonucleic acid testing in women with abnormal Papanicolaou smears

Article Abstract:

Fluid left over from cervical tissue samples taken during a Pap smear can be analyzed for papillomavirus DNA. Certain strains of this virus have been linked to cervical cancer. Researchers used this technique to analyze fluid samples from 265 women who had an abnormal Pap smear. Papillomavirus DNA was detected in 86% of the women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), which is thought to be a precursor of cervical cancer.
