Relation between symptoms of depression and health status outcomes in acutely ill hospitalized older persons

Article Abstract:

Elderly hospital patients who are depressed may experience more severe health problems after discharge and have a poor quality of life. Researchers followed 572 hospitalized patients older than 70 for up to 90 days after discharge. Patients who had 6 or more symptoms of depression during their hospitalization were more than 3 times more likely to require help with activities of daily living after discharge compared to those with 2 or fewer symptoms. This was true even after adjusting for demographic characteristics and severity of the illness for which they were hospitalized.

Depressive Symptoms and 3-Year Mortality in Older Hospitalized Medical Patients

Article Abstract:

Depressed elderly people may have a greater burden of disease and appear more likely to die than non-depressed elderly people. Researcher compared 573 patients over age 70. Depressed patients had more diseases, had less independent function, and more mental impairment that non-depressed patients. Within three years, 56% of depressed patients and 40% of non-depressed patients had died.
