Researchers probe pathways of pain: new insights emerging from molecular studies

Article Abstract:

Researchers are focusing on specific pain receptors and the molecules that stimulate them in order to develop more specific painkillers. One focus of study is the receptor that binds capsaicin, a chemical that gives chili peppers their spicy flavor. Chemicals from the marijuana plant called cannabinoids can block pain receptors. Other researchers are looking at genes and the sex differences in pain perception.

Physicians apply genome research to treating critical illness and injury

Article Abstract:

Researchers hope to study which genes are expressed in critically ill patients so they can develop appropriate treatments. This can be done using small chips that can detect the activity of hundreds and even thousands of genes in a drop of blood. Different patients may have different patterns of gene expression, allowing doctors to provide individualized treatment plans.

Trials probe new agents for kidney cancer

Article Abstract:

The results of new phase 3 clinical trail point to the potential of several targeted therapies for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma or kidney cancer. Hence, several investigators are conducting a randomized phase 3 trial to compare the efficacy and safety of first-line sunitinib with interferon alfa.
