Respect: protecting the privacy and dignity of patients is a long-standing staple of nursing. So why has the Department of Health included it as a clinical benchmark?

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom's Department of Health is focusing on improving the protection of the dignity and privacy of patients. In "The Essence of Care" publication, patients expressed their prioritization of dignity and privacy issues. Many patients used examples of where doctors and other health care staff were too intrusive in their personal space when providing health services.

Patient choice may threaten equity

Article Abstract:

The author examines how patient choice may change the administration and delivery of health services in the UK. The author suggests that the National Health Service needs to increase capacity, improve patient education, and offer complementary therapies in order to better facilitate patient choice.

Will we ever see the end of mixed wards?

Article Abstract:

The ongoing debate over the feasibility of phasing out of mixed-sex wards is discussed. Nurses advocate single-sex wards to honor the privacy and dignity of the patient.
