Restricted visiting hours in ICUs: time to change

Article Abstract:

Restricted hospital visiting hours began in the late 1800s for nonpaying patients in an attempt to establish order in the general wards. The idea of liberalizing the ICU visiting hours could generate considerable resistance among nurses and physicians, who are largely focused on worries like, increased psychologic stress for the patients, interference with the provision of care, and physical and mental exhaustion of family and friends.

Disseminating innovations in health care

Article Abstract:

The diffusion of a new idea across the healthcare industry depends on the success of the new idea, the perception and characteristics of the people adopting it, and management support. For this reason, health care executives need to find sound innovations, support the personnel who routinely adopt new ideas, and lead by example. In the British Navy, it took 264 years for citrus fruits to be widely adopted to prevent scurvy in sailors.
