Budgeting and Management by Objectives

Article Abstract:

Management by objectives (MBO) can assist the health planner in determining desired goals first, and then in formulating steps necessary to arrive at these goals. MBO also assists in the formulation of required resources for goal achievement. Budgeting by MBO is different from the traditional budgeting process whereby past years are used as a base and added incrementally to arrive at a current budget. MBO budgeting uses a zero- based budgeting system. A zero-based system evaluates programs and operations with the intent of transferring resources into areas of high priority. This increases manager input into how money is spent, and allows the manager to incorporate budgeting into his overall MBO planning. Examples are given as the process of integrating MBO with budgeting is described.

Rethinking somatization

Article Abstract:

Patients with so-called somatic disorders may be better served by doctors who care for the whole person rather than identify specific diseases. Most somatic disorders are those with no obvious scientific basis. The terminology used to describe somatic disorders is based on the shaky and only recent premise that emotions and bodily functions are distinct entities. Unexplained physical symptoms may be the body's way of handling complex emotions or may be rooted in physical disease undetected or identified by current technology.
