Risk Factors for Pilot Fatalities in General Aviation Airplane Crash Landings

Article Abstract:

Pilots of small airplanes used in general aviation can reduce their risk of death in a crash by using lap and shoulder belts. General aviation includes recreational flying, sightseeing and other types of small craft operations. Analysis of 8,411 crash landings of small aircraft between 1983 and 1992 found that 437 resulted in the death of the pilot. Fire or explosion substantially increased the risk of death. Pilots who did not use either the lap or shoulder belt were much more likely to die than those who used one or both.

Gun storage practices and risk of youth suicide and unintentional firearm injuries

Article Abstract:

The study aimed to measure the association of specific household firearm storage practices and the risk of unintentional and self-inflicted firearm injuries. It concluded that the 4 practices of keeping a gun, unloaded, storing ammunition locked, and a separate location are each associated with a protective effect and suggest a feasible strategy to reduce these types of injuries in homes with children and teenagers where guns are stored.
