Risk of fetal mosaicism when placental mosaicism is diagnosed by chorionic villus sampling

Article Abstract:

Prenatal genetic tests of the placenta that show a specific class of chromosome abnormalities called mosaicism may indicate a fetus with mosaicism in 10% of cases. Researchers managed one patient in whom chorionic villus sampling (CVS) detected the chromosome abnormality known as mosaic trisomy 22 in the placenta, and later, in the fetus. They then evaluated 13 studies in which mosaic trisomy 22 was found by CVS in the placenta of 469 patients. Amniocentesis of these patients revealed 50 fetuses with mosaic trisomy 22, a rate of 10.7%. Findings of placental mosaicism by CVS may be more frequent than findings of fetal mosaicism by amniocentesis. Accuracy may be improved by performing CVS analysis of mesenchymal core cells, which are better indicators of the fetus's condition.

Recent developments in hormone delivery systems

Article Abstract:

Women who want safe, effective contraception have many options that must be weighed according to the needs and lifestyles of each particular woman. One method provides long-term convenience with a side effect that is comparable to that of oral contraceptives and another option is the levonor-gestral-releasing intrauterine contraceptive system that offers prevention of pregnancy for five years.
