Salary vs. solo: weighing the costs and benefits of a regular paycheck

Article Abstract:

There are both drawbacks and benefits for physicians who joined a managed health network. A network offers the advantages of regular hours and a predictable paycheck. Physicians are freed from some of the red tape of running a practice and are able to concentrate on their patients. However, physician salaries at a health maintenance organization, for example, are slightly lower than private practice income. A discussion of techniques for negotiating a position at a managed care network is presented.

Let the record show..

Article Abstract:

Ensuring that medical records are accurate and comprehensive is a paramount concern for physicians, who can suffer compromised reputations and legal setbacks from incomplete records. Juries are more apt to find physician testimony credible if it is complemented by records with information that corroborates that testimony. Physicians who undertake 12 quality control measures, including uniformity, dictated records, and timeliness, can safeguard against faulty medical records.

Strength in numbers

Article Abstract:

Physicians are joining independent practice associations (IPAs) in response to the growing managed care market. IPAs offer physicians an opportunity to win better contracts and regain a measure of autonomy from managed care organizations. Physician-hospital organizations (PHOs) include hospitals and operate the same as IPAs. Doctors are supportive of legislation that would exempt these groups from antitrust laws.
