Saw Palmetto Extracts for Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Article Abstract:

Saw palmetto extract appears to effectively relieve symptoms of benign prostate enlargement in men. Enlargement of the prostate, not associated with prostate cancer, can cause urinary urgency, difficulty urinating, and weak urinary flow. Researchers reviewed 18 randomized clinical trials of saw palmetto, an herbal extract of the Serenoa repens plant. In the best-designed studies, saw palmetto reduced the frequency of nighttime urination, improved urinary flow, and generally reduced the symptoms of prostate enlargement, compared to placebo. Saw palmetto was about as effective as finasteride, a prescription medication used to treat prostate enlargement.
