Sentenced to care?

Article Abstract:

Nurses at Ashworth Special Hospital are not trained to work with patients with forensic personality disorders, according to evidence which the hospital submitted to the police enquiry into activities at the hospital. Nurses are frightened of the patients and unable to be assertive with them. The issue raises questions about whether a treatment regime is the best option for these patients. Expert opinion is divided on whether or not personality disorders are treatable, but the work of two therapeutic communities indicates that therapy can be successful.

Paper tigers?

Article Abstract:

A number of initiatives aimed at improving the involvement of users of mental health services and their carers in decision-making about services required have been introduced. The Health Advisory Service (HAS) has announced a review of the involvement of mental health users and carers in the planning and provision of mental health services. The HAS believes that users and their carers should be given a higher priority, and that social workers should not attempt to simply fit users into existing services.
