Building with intelligence

Article Abstract:

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is though to affect 30-50% of new or modernised buildings, according to figures released by the World Health Organisation. In buildings affected with SBS, between 20-85% of employees may experience a number of symptoms ranging from irritability, to headaches, rashes, and itchy skin, eyes, throats or noses. The condition is thought to cost British business 330-650 million pounds sterling annually. An overview of ways of addressing the condition is included.

First aid

Article Abstract:

Encouraging employees to undertake first aid in the workplace training can be beneficial to both the workforce and employer, with more attention paid to accident prevention, immediate treatment for those who suffer an injury and less time off work for those who require sick leave. The Health and Safety Executive must fully sanction any workplace first aid courses, ensuring the necessary areas of training are covered and the correct procedures are followed.

Yes, but who takes care of the aidworkers?

Article Abstract:

Aid organisations must develop good occupational health practice since many aid workers suffer chronic health problems such as back pain, long term disease and disability. Those running projects in extreme situations must still be aware of their legal obligations and responsibilities to health and safety. Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) prepares aid workers for minimum nine month tours with intensive training.
