Serious hepatitis A: an analysis of patients hospitalized during an urban epidemic in the United States

Article Abstract:

Hepatitis A can have serious complications and even lead to death in some patients. This viral infection affects the liver and is usually mild and self-limited. Researchers investigated an outbreak of hepatitis A in Memphis and Shelby County, TN, which ultimately affected 1,700 people. A review of 256 people who were hospitalized found that 35 patients experienced a serious complication, many of which occurred in other organs than the liver. Five patients died. Complications or death was more likely in those 40 years old or older.

Gene vaccines offer a precise and powerful approach to treating serious infections

Article Abstract:

Researchers are hoping DNA vaccines will be more effective than traditional vaccines. Traditional vaccines use an inactivated form of a virus or bacteria to stimulate the production of antibodies against the organism. DNA vaccines only contain the DNA sequence of a single viral or bacterial protein. This may produce a much more specific response with fewer side effects.
