Sick building syndrome?

Article Abstract:

A factory inspector engaged in the inspection of construction sites, believes that health issues in the construction industry have not received enough attention. There is a lack of ill health statistics, the workforce is constantly changing, and there are uncertainties about cause and effect. Any action taken by industry or the HSE has usually been piecemeal and unco-ordinated. Asbestos is the main cause of occupationally related deaths and numbers suffering from musculoskeletal conditions are high. Respiratory diseases affect about 24,00 workers and contact dermatitis is the main skin disease affecting constructionw orkers.

On the fast track

Article Abstract:

The Mossmorran Module III project undertaken by Shell Expro in Scotland required stringent safety measures. The project entailed building a third gas processing facilities next to and within live operational plant. Security was needed because of the short time scale (2 years) and the amount of workers; 785 at the project's peak in Sum 1991. Safety measures undertaken were: minimum congestion; close working relationships between constructors and plant operators; the operation of a safety sub-committee and work permits covering areas such as crane surveillance approved by a safety inspector and the approved engineer.
