Comparison of infrared spectroscopic and fluorescence depolarization assays for fetal lung maturity

Article Abstract:

Infrared spectroscopy may replace other methods of analyzing amniotic fluid to estimate how mature the fetal lungs are. This is done by measuring the ratio of fetal lung surfactant to albumin in amniotic fluid samples.

Rapid determination of fetal lung maturity from infrared spectra of amniotic fluid

Article Abstract:

Fetal lung maturity may be estimated with infrared spectroscopy of amniotic fluid. The standard test of phospholipids in amniotic fluid, indicative of the development of lung surfactant in the fetus, is complex and time-consuming. Researchers compared standard amniotic fluid chromatography with infrared spectroscopy to estimate the lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio of phospholipids. The infrared method was highly predictive of the phospholipid ratio, and the results compared closely to those obtained by chromatography. Infrared spectroscopy may provide a simple, rapid test of lung maturity.

Simultaneous quantitation from infrared spectra of glucose concentrations, lactate concentrations, and lecithin/sphingomyelin ratios in amniotic fluid

Article Abstract:

The infrared spectrum of amniotic fluid can be used to assess fetal lung maturity. This test detects the amounts of glucose, lactate and phospholipids in amniotic fluid. This in turn helps doctors diagnose fetal distress, signs of infection, and fetal lung diseases.
