Social Marxism, class conflict and health care

Article Abstract:

Marxism is a key theme in the study of sociology, particularly the sociology of illness and health. Karl Marx focused on the transformation of society, believing society's socio-economic foundations are based on culture and politics. Marxism clearly describes the inequality of the relationships between social classes and the organisation of the capitalist society. The inequalities of access to resources is also described in Marxism. Marx's sociological views in relation to medicine are examined.

Giddens and late modernity: analysing 20th century life

Article Abstract:

The work of sociology professor Anthony Giddens has a firm basis in classical European sociological tradition. He has created a theory relevant to contemporary or late modern society out of the work of more empirical sociologists. He believes that sociology can empower ordinary people by giving them an awareness of the nature of the society in which they live.

Goffman, the individual, institutions and stigmatisation

Article Abstract:

Erving Goffman's sociology is based on the individual and not social systems. He believed that social interaction led to a social identity. In his study 'Asylums,' Goffman showed how admission to an institution removed an individual's identity. His work has led to the closure of long-term hospitals.
