Staying afloat: how two rural hospitals are succeeding in tough times

Article Abstract:

Two thirds of rural hospitals closed in the last half of the 1980s, according to an American Hospital Assn report. Surviving hospitals devised strategies to overcome loss of population, agricultural enterprises and industry, plus a shortage of medical personnel. Successful management practices are described by CEO Charles H Bair, of the Upper Valley Medical Centers, Troy, OH, and CEO Jim Long, of West River Regional Medical Center, Hettinger, ND.

Fake patients cost hospitals time and money

Article Abstract:

Hospitals are being victimized by patients who go to several hospitals, where they give false names, false insurance information and faked symptoms. Some are looking for drugs, which may later be sold on the street. Others may have a psychological quirk that makes them desire attentive hospital care. One troubling case involves a self-styled AIDS patient who has been reported at a number of hospitals in the Southeast.

Selling 'excellence': public hospitals trying to buck bad image

Article Abstract:

Public hospitals are increasingly attempting to overcome their negative image and increase market share by attracting insured patients with specialized clinical programs. Programs such as genetic counseling and organ transplantation allow public hospitals to compete with university and private hospitals for patients requiring these services.
