Steps Toward Understanding, Alleviating Osteoarthritis Will Help Aging Population

Article Abstract:

Researchers discussed osteoarthritis at a July, 1999 conference. Osteoarthritis is caused by a breakdown of cartilage in joints that leads to joint degeneration. It affects mostly the hands, feet, knees and hips. Genetics may make some people susceptible to osteoarthritis but biomechanical damage is also important. It seems to involve attempts by the body to repair the damaged joint, not all of which are successful. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most common drug treatment. A 1997 book popularized the use of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to treat the disease. Antioxidants may also be beneficial since some immune cells produce free radicals.

The Arts of Healing

Article Abstract:

More than 400 doctors, researchers, artists, designers, policymakers and architects from 26 countries gathered at the first World Symposium on Culture, Health, and the Arts held at Manchester Metropolitan University. Many presented research on how art, music, poetry and architecture can affect the health of hospital patients. Art in patients' hospital rooms can positively impact their health. However, not all art is appropriate. Nature scenes appear more beneficial than abstract art. In addition to nature scenes, music and caring human faces are universal stress-relievers in all cultures studied.
