Strategies for altering practice

Article Abstract:

The increasing number of new European Union rules regarding manual lifting and handling at work has forced health services in the U.K. to view the health and safety of nursing staff with more importance. The Manual Handling Operations (MHO) Regulations 1992 require employers to ensure that employees are protected as much as possible from risk of injury. To meet these obligations, the elderly services directorate at the Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust has established a manual handling training programme. The problems associated with setting-up the programme are discussed.

Spent force

Article Abstract:

Funding of the National Health Service (NHS) should be reviewed by the government, according to 'Future Health Care Options', a report by the Institute of Health Services Management. Local accountability in the NHS should be extended to the level and method of spending. Social insurance should be introduced in the UK, to allow the public to see how money is being spent. The public could also pay more for extra benefits. The government should state that health care is rationed, then show clearly how it is divided. Local taxation should also be considered.
