Strong advocacy made 1996-97 one of the AMA's best years

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association (AMA) is enjoying the benefits of its effective physician advocacy in 1996-97. The AMA's activism has earned the organization high-esteem in Congress, access to policy-makers and lobbyists, and influence. In 1996-97, Congress fulfilled much of the AMA's agenda by passing an appealing medical reform plan including health insurance reform, fraud and abuse and antitrust guidelines, and mental health equality.

Convenient corruption: a dispute about executions reveals risk to medical ethics

Article Abstract:

Illinois has passed legislation that would exempt physicians participating in executions from ethical reviews. This legislation corrupts medical ethics which require that a physician do no harm. A physician does not need to provide the lethal injection or even to pronounce an executed prisoner dead. Illinois may have written this legislation in order to make executions a legitimate practice.
