Calif. Blue Cross to convert managed care to for-profit

Article Abstract:

Blue Cross of California will turn its managed care business into a for-profit subsidiary named WellPoint Health Networks Inc. The firm will issue 15 million shares of common stock pending the plan's approval by the California Dept of Corporations. The move will give Blue Cross capital for buying equipment and setting up vertically integrated facilities which would offer physicians, hospitals and insurers under one roof.

Article Abstract:

Dr. Stephen Bergman has written the novel "Mount Misery" under his pen name of Samuel Shem to criticize the role of managed care firms in psychiatric care. In "Mount Misery," a sequel to his 1978 best-selling novel "The House of God," Dr. Roy Basch goes to a psychiatric teaching hospital in the Boston, MA-area to serve a residency. The book examines many of the problems of psychiatry as Roy rotates through the hospital.
