Article Abstract:

Interested parties give their verdict on UK government proposals to create a consultant grade within the nursing profession. The government will probably announce final details concerning this grade early in 1999. Trade union Unison strongly supports the inauguration of the new grade whilst maintaining that more government action is necessary to tackle problems in the nursing profession. The Royal College of Nursing appreciates the recognition of the work of nurse practitioners. The British Medical Association believes the title could mislead the public.
