Support for carers of people with learning disabilities

Article Abstract:

Since the emphasis for the funding and administration of care has changed from being hospital to community-based, carers are carrying the majority of the burden of caring for people with learning difficulties. While the community-based services are being considered by the policy makers, it is crucial that community nurses work alongside parents to prioritise a child's needs and provide all the relevant information regarding the appropriate services available to the carer.

Whose best interest?

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Central Council's Code of Professional Conduct for the Nurse, Midwife and Health Visitor requires nurses to act as patient advocate. The role of the nurse as patient advocate is questioned on the grounds that nurses may not be able to act independently from their employers, that nurses' general educational background is inadequate, amd that the patient is forced to depend on nurses out of fear of suffering and pain.

An approach to dealing with stress in carers

Article Abstract:

A family's problems related to caring for a child with Down's syndrome are discussed, including the child's disruptive behaviour both at home and in school. An assessment of the child's needs was made using Orem's model of nursing and further information was gain through Peplau's observations. Intervention was in the form of assisting the child's parents to gain a better understanding of their situation.
