Who cares for skin?: up to a third of people in the UK have a skin disease

Article Abstract:

Nurses can be important in helping patients keep to treatment regimes for skin conditions, according to an investigation into dermatological services by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Skin (APPG). Patients with skin diseases have traditionally been given low priority by the NHS and the investigation has suggested ways of improving dermatology services, such as making more use of nurse specialists and making dermatology part of a compulsory core curriculum in nursing education.

Dorrell denies crisis in nurse recruitment

Article Abstract:

Stephen Dorrell, the UK health secretary, has stated that the UK nursing profession is not undergoing a crisis although members of parliament are concerned about shortages of nurses. The UK National Health Service (NHS) may be under pressure from a drop in recruitment levels, critics fear. The UK Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is concerned that the government does not want to recognize that a problem exists in recruitment of nurses at all levels in the UK.

Whistle while you work

Article Abstract:

Northwick Park and St Mark's NHS Trust in Middlesex has become the first NHS trust to launch a charter to protect the rights of employees to freedom of speech. It is hoped that this will encourage people to speak out about cases where standards of nursing care have been poor. It is now hoped that new procedures for raising issues of concern will ensure that all staff receive confidential help and support.
