Famed transplant surgeon ready for criminal trial

Article Abstract:

Dr John Najarian will go on trial facing 21 counts of ignoring drug safety, theft, filing false tax returns and attempting to block an investigation of his conduct. Dr. Najarian claims these charges are false but if convicted on all charges for the maximum penalty he could be sentenced to pay fines totalling $4.5 million and spend 106 years in jail. There are over 1 million pages of documents for the case which could take two to three months. The case is an attempt to show that no one is above the law, even a famed transplant surgeon who has contributed so much.

Expanding generalist work force seen as ill-conceived

Article Abstract:

Michael E. Whitcomb of the Association of American Medical Colleges is criticizing the methodology the Council on Graduate Medical Education uses to determine that 50% of medical school graduates should be general practitioners. Whitcomb says the conclusion is based on a single study of the specialist/generalist mix in Western European countries. Whitcomb and many others believe that physician-to-population ratios should be used to determine the mix.

Mesa back from the edge

Article Abstract:

The Federal Trade Commission has eased its settlement proposal against Colorado's Mesa County Physicians Individual Practice Association. Instead of dismantling Mesa, the settlement requires Mesa to disband a contract review board and adhere to standard FTC guidelines against anticompetitive behavior. Mesa dropped the contract review board prior to the FTC's request.
