Surgeon told of tobacco's dangers long before we listened

Article Abstract:

Physician Albert Fields was an anti-smoking activist in the 1950s, when such a view was extremely unpopular. In the beginning, he was frequently vilified by the medical establishment and sought support in the American Heart Assn and the American Lung Assn. Smoking is now banned in many public buildings and workplaces, and cigarette television advertising has been banned since 1969. Fields feels that his anti-smoking work is his most important contribution to medicine and counsels young physicians to stay with a cause that they believe in.
