Surgery and acute care following hip fracture

Article Abstract:

Preoperative care of an elderly woman with a fractured femur must include giving pressure area care and analgesia as needed, as well as explaining to the patient what will happen immediately after the surgery. Postoperative care will centre on ensuring the patient's safety and comfort, avoiding complications connected with surgery and immobility and planning rehabilitation. The patient should receive intravenous fluids for 24 hours, and blood urea and electrolyte levels must be checked before intravenous fluids are stopped.

Hip home

Article Abstract:

Derbyshire, England has introduced a 12 day 'hospital-at-home' (HaH) scheme for patients with broken hips. All medical and related disciplines are involved in the service. District nurses provide nursing care, occupational therapists ensure necessary equipment is available and physiotherapists organise the rehabilitation programme. Generic workers provide daily support aiming to encourage patients' independence. The scheme will be extended to other groups of patients due to its success and popularity.

Home help

Article Abstract:

A device for the administration of intravenous antibiotics at home has improved the quailty of life for cystic fybrosis sufferers. About 93 patients have effectively used the Intermate system from Dec 1990 to Dec 1991. The device has reduced treatment time and removed many of the worries associated with self-treatment. It has also reduced the incidence of phlebitis and hospital acquired viral infections.
