Survey finds state consumer hot lines 'dropping the ball.' (state insurance department informational phonelines; study conducted by the Center for Insurance Research)

Article Abstract:

Many state insurance departments are providing misleading information and unprofessional service through public hotlines, according to a survey conducted by the Center for Insurance Research in Cambridge, MA. Inadequate funding has contributed to deficiencies in hotline service at many state agencies. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners is sceduled to release a model form for states to report information about medical plans to consumers in Oct 1996.

Calif. Blues drop 12-month exclusion for maternity

Article Abstract:

A 12-month maternity benefit exclusion has been dropped by Blue Cross of California and Blue Shield of California in Mar and Feb 1996 respectively. Charging double for normal maternity benefit deductibles will be continued by both insurers, however. Coverage was denied by Blue Cross exclusions to more than 7,000 women and almost as many by Blue Shield, but such exclusions may be in violation of California law.

Insurance coverage for clinical trials

Article Abstract:

Maryland is expected to pass a law requiring insurance companies to cover clinical trials for new or experimental treatments. The Maryland Association of HMOs has supported the bill due to its specific payment guidelines. Coverage would extend to patients with life-threatening illnesses who are enrolled in federally approved trials or trials sponsored by specific hospitals.
