Teaming up for transformation

Article Abstract:

Establishment and cellular transformation, which are the two stages involved in the oncogenic transformation of primary cells and oncogenes cooperated to induce tumour development, is investigated. It identifies cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis as the growth restrictive aspects of oncogene activation and the pathways that evolved to limit cellular transformation.

Stop or die!

Article Abstract:

The main DNA tumour viruses which transform cells by inactivating both retinoblastoma protein (RB) and tumour suppressor gene (p53) are studied. It is found that inappropriate S-phase entry owing to loss of RB results in p53-dependent apoptosis, thereby linking the two central tumour-suppressor pathways in the cell.

Death defying

Article Abstract:

Specific roles for cell death in cancer development are proposed. It shows that failure to induce apoptosis produces hyperplasia whereas further mutations are required to produce overt neoplasia, overall the inability of a cell to die is potentially tumorigenic.
