The Internet: what's on it for you?

Article Abstract:

On-line discussion groups such as Gasnet, for anesthesiologists, offer access to hundreds of practitioners for discussions on subjects such as treatment and hospital policy. Gasnet includes doctors in private practice, at universities, and in rural areas as well as officials from the FDA, equipment vendors, and nurse anesthesiologists. These users offer a diverse range of experience in anesthesiology and can sometimes help a particular user answer an obscure question or help treat a rare condition. Information about using e-mail to talk to patients and using the Internet to find a job or look up clinical data is also included.

Seeing the rainbow: winds of change are sweeping through medicine's ranks, but the clouds are lifting for a brighter future

Article Abstract:

The demographics of US physicians have changed radically since 1963. There are 615,000 US physicians in 1993, compared to 277,000 in 1963. In 1963, there was one for every 686 people; in 1993 the number has grown to one for every 410 people. One-sixth of US doctors are women. While the proportions of African-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans have remained the same over 30 years, their absolute numbers have grown, perhaps providing role models for future generations. The diversity of doctors is expected to increase, with more minority, disabled and openly gay and lesbian doctors in years to come.

So what's new?

Article Abstract:

Physicians have a wide variety of information sources for medical and scientific information. However, there is a large volume of medical research and information that is being published in journals, CD-ROM discs and online databases. Information that is disseminated over online networks, such as special interest groups on the Internet, is available faster than information in journals. However, online searching is difficult to learn and more cumbersome than traditional print resources. Managed care organizations often provide valuable information services through bulletins.
