The Mortality of Elder Mistreatment

Article Abstract:

Elderly adults who are mistreated have higher mortality rates than other elderly adults. This was the conclusion of a 13-year study that followed 2,812 community-dwelling adults older than 65 years. During that time, 176 were seen by elderly protective services for suspected abuse, neglect, or self-neglect. Self-neglect was implicated in 73% of the cases, abuse in 6%, and neglect in 17%. Adults who had been mistreated had a mortality rate three times higher compared with others in the study.
