White-collar expatriates living in the United Arab Emirates must deal with a combination of comfort and day-to-day doubt as to their status. The comforts abounding in this oil-rich country range from air-conditioning to freedom from personal income tax, while the doubts derive from never knowing for sure what foreign behavior will be deemed offensive in this Muslim land and render the perpetrator liable to expulsion at short notice.

A series of conveyor belts transports leftover food and dirty crockery to be sorted and waste water is cleaned bacteriologically.
