The art and science of nursing

Article Abstract:

The philosophy of nursing as both a science and art is dicussed. Science is considered as quantifiable, covering the nurse's science of curing and treating illness, whereas arts are considered expressive, covering the nurse's art of healing. The public sees nursing as a caring profession, an image which nurses are keen to keep, but nurses also want to foster a professional, harder, rational, scientific and academic side. Despite this, a lot of the content of Project 2000 material excludes physical science, as the scientific base in the curriculum is gradually being cut out.

Theoretical shift

Article Abstract:

Medical models should be considered in building a theoretical body of knowledge for nursing. Nursing models have developed in an attempt to give nursing academic status but they may be ignoring the medical model example as it is not holistic in approach. However, medical models based on anatomy, physiology, pathology and treatment are fundamental to nursing practice.
