The art of 'HAART': researchers probe the potential and limits of aggressive HIV treatments

Article Abstract:

Researchers presented data that was both encouraging and discouraging at the 4th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Jan, 1997. Many of the participants reported research on treating HIV infection with a combination of drugs, including protease inhibitors. Some studies have shown such drug combinations can reduce blood levels of HIV to undetectable amounts. However, the virus may still hide in certain tissues. In addition, the damaged immune system may not completely recover. For this reason, it seems important to treat patients early in the infection.

Incidence of opportunistic and other infections in HIV-infected children in the HAART era

Article Abstract:

Highly antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has resulted in a drastic decrease in the incidence of opportunistic and other infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected adults and children. It is reported that continued surveillance is vital in order to assess the long term effect of HAART on the occurrence of opportunistic and other related infections in children.

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan Africa and North America: A meta-analysis

Article Abstract:

A systematic review and meta-analysis are undertaken to evaluate estimates of adherence to antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan Africa and North America. Findings indicate that favorable levels of adherence to therapy, mostly assessed through a patient self-report, can be achieved in sub-Saharan Africa, but adherence remains inadequate in North America.
