The effects of short- and long-term supplementation with fish oil on the incorporation of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids into cells of the immune system in healthy volunteers

Article Abstract:

The short- and medium-term effects of feeding fish oil on the phospholipid fatty acids of plasma, platelets and the main cellular categories of peripheral blood mononuclear cells of eight healthy male volunteers were assessed. Results showed that the eicosapentanoic acid levels increased by two weeks and stabilized for the ensuing 10 weeks. Arachidonic acid decreased in plasma, platelets, neutrophils and T- and B-lymphocytes most significantly by week 12. Uptake of plasma eicosapentanoic acid by the immune system cells occurs by phospholipid exchange into preformed mature cells without the need for incorporation during cell genesis.

Dietary intake of vegetables and fruits among adults in five regions of Spain

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken among the Spanish cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition indicates that the consumption of fruits is higher than the consumption of vegetables. This difference is even more significant when consumption is represented as a proportion of total energy intake. Vegetable consumption is higher among men than among women, while fruit consumption is almost identical for both sexes. Consumption of both fruit and vegetables is considerably higher than in some other European countries and in the US.
