The influence of nutrient intake on the biochemical parameters of iron status in a healthy paediatric Mediterranean population

Article Abstract:

A study of 302 children aged six months to 15 years old coming from a stable, homogeneous population with good socio-economic status revealed abnormal values of biochemical parameters for iron status. The nutritional intake of children with high and low values for biochemical iron status was evaluated and significant differences were found between age groups. However, there was no significant finding that could correlate with heme iron intake. This finding suggests that other factors aside from nutrition are responsible for abnormal biochemical iron status.

Energy density of the diet, food volume and energy intake by age and sex in a healthy population

Article Abstract:

There are a number of well-defined stages within the overall long-term change in energy intake with age, according to research into the variations in energy intake, food volume and energy density in relation to age and gender. In the first period, up to puberty, there is a progressive rise in energy intake. There is a tendency towards declining energy density of the diet from early adulthood. Food volume changes as a function of age and gender, but indicated a less clear link with changes in ingested energy.
