The pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux disease: a challenge in clinical physiology

Article Abstract:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a disorder characterized by heartburn and inflammation of the esophagus caused by reflux of the acidic juices of the stomach into the esophagus. Patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease may be difficult to treat because of differences in the development and progression of this disease. Treatments for the disease include different types of drugs or surgery. A research study found that both a hiatal hernia and reduced lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure may contribute to the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Patients underwent both endoscopy and a series of radiographic studies. Identification of the cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease affects the treatment of the disorder in different individuals. The presence of a hiatal hernia may not affect treatment in most patients. The majority may need to undergo some type of treatment to restore function of the LES.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease presenting with intractable nausea

Article Abstract:

Unexplained nausea resistant to routine treatment may be the first sign of gastroesophageal reflux disease in some patients. The medical records of 10 patients with treatment-resistant nausea were evaluated. Screening tests included visual examination, pain threshold, and electrical activity tests of the stomach and small intestine and pH measurements in the esophagus. Doctors determined that all 10 patients had gastroesophageal reflux disease. The six patients with abnormal pH test results frequently experienced heartburn during nausea episodes. Treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease was also successful in relieving the nausea.

The burning issue of chronic gastroesophageal reflux

Article Abstract:

Doctors should pay more attention to treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the medical term for heartburn. GERD is a risk factor for esophageal cancer, which has a very poor prognosis.
