Article Abstract:

Nursing has become more professional over the years with the formation of professional organisations and the development of codes of practice. However clinical nurses have controls placed on them which affect their independence. The management structure of nursing underwent changes in NHS reorganisation in the seventies, giving more managerial responsibilities to senior nurses. However, the introduction of recent general management reforms, which change traditional nursing roles, have left the nursing profession feeling insecure.

Shaping the future of shared governance

The work of an elected council for midwives, nurses and health visitors in Dorchester, England, is discussed within the context of shared governance for nurse management. This council aims to boost patient care and nursing practice by empowering nursing staff. It also acts as a focal point for discussion within a framework of shared governance.

Expanding the remit of palliative care

Palliative care in the United Kingdom is discussed with emphasis on its provision. The advantages of having a broader outlook to such care and including palliative care as a specialist service among the basic nursing practice are presented.
